Tithes and offerings

Tithes are biblical practices of giving a portion of one’s income or produce to God and his work. (Malachi 3:10)

Tithing was first mentioned when Abraham gave a tenth of his spoils to Melchizedek, the priest-king of Salem (Gen 14:19-20).

Jesus affirmed the importance of tithing, but also warned against neglecting justice, mercy, and faithfulness (Matt 23:23; Luke 11:42).

Offerings were voluntary gifts of gratitude, worship, or devotion, such as the first fruits, the freewill, or thanksgiving offerings (Deut 26:1-11; Lev 22:18-23; Ps 50:14).

The New Testament teaches that Christians should give generouslycheerfullyand according to their ability, to support the church, the poor, and the spread of the gospel (2 Cor 9:6-15; Acts 11:29-30; Phil 4:15-19).
